Kurt Fagerland
Transplanted New Yorker Kurt Fagerland is a multi-talented artist who executes his craft across a broad spectrum of visual media. As a painter and illustrator, he works in oils, watercolors, acrylics, and spray paint – “just about any kind of paint I can get my hands on.” He is a sculptor and carver as well, typically creating works of wood or stone. Of late, Kurt has found himself drawn to painting graphite on canvas and working in mixed media. His works have been displayed at private showings in both New York and Atlanta. He is also a budding author, and is nearing the completion of his first work of fiction.
For the past five years Kurt has worked full-time as a tattoo artist, the last two of those at the renowned Ink & Dagger Tattoo Parlour in Decatur, GA. He has tattooed people from all walks of life, including musicians and professional athletes.
A native of Long Island, Kurt earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a minor in art education from New York Institute of Technology. Upon graduation, Kurt continued his worldly education with stints as a carpenter, a forklift driver, a construction landscaper, and a deckhand on an exploratory engineering vessel. His subsequent career has been influenced by experiences gained in those jobs. He was also a guitar player, vocalist and composer for two punk rock bands, and an energetic participant in the do-it-yourself (DIY) movement that has become an important element of that genre.
Kurt began his career as a tattoo artist with a working apprenticeship under Cort Bengtson at Cort’s Royal Ink Tattoo Studio in Patchogue, NY, developing a solid clientele in his two years there. He then embarked on a period of travel, doing guest sessions at a variety of studios in the U.S. and abroad.
Beginning December 1, 2011 you will find Kurt at Memorial Tattoo in Cabbagetown. He keeps himself fresh and creatively stimulated with annual guest visits to other locations, primarily New York and Norway, his father’s native home. He has attracted a strong clientele in both locations and his visits to both are extremely popular.
Kurt was recently guest artist for a week at Guru Tattoo, a leading studio in San Diego. He won first place for Most Realistic Tattoo at the 2011 Atlanta Tattoo Convention. If you’re interested in getting tattooed by Kurt, this is the best place to start.
